How to use Special Events during your to retain your audience
Special occasions are always reasons to celebrate: birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, the list goes on. This goes the exact same for your show. Using exciting new promotions in your show to get your audience excited for new show that are coming along.
What is a special event?
Special Events (or Tentpole Programming)are episodes or sets of episodes that deviate from your traditional programming, centered around something going on in the world (ie game release, movie release, world events).
These special events allow people who are excited for the new release to find your show and potentially collect new subscribers with your content geared toward that specific event.
Catering to these large special events allows for a different audience to approach your show. For example, (to date this article) the new Red Dead Redemption video game from Rockstar Games releases this week. If you have a video game podcast, you can talk about your favorite moments from the original game. Or if you have a history podcast, you can talk about the Old West and the difference between cowboy lore and reality.
The options to what you can do are limited to your own creativity.
Why is the benefit of special events for your podcast?
Why is something like a special event relevant to your show? For several reasons!
One: you can attract a different group of subscribers, from a different fanbase or a different “part of the internet” as I like to say.
Two: You are riding the hype of the event! People are excited about what’s going on, so do what you do best and give your audience what they want!
Three: Normally when some big release is approaching, people are seeing references to that everywhere, television, advertisements, Youtube videos. Ride the hype train and
How to Spread the Word
With this being a special event, you have to promote a little differently, you should promote to specific demographics, as well as your normal audience.
Pre-promote in and out of your show.
Promoting beforehand allows your audience to get excited about the new content and help spread the word to all of their friends. Word of Mouth is one of the best ways to promote, so go ahead, get your subscribers talking! Also, find groups who are interested in this topic and promote there. Social Media sites and groups are always the best option for these.
Don’t forget to mention it a few episodes before to get your audience excited!
Promoting Once the Episodes are Released
Find people who are interested in this topic. Reddit and other social media sites can be your best friend in situations like these and help you expand your audience. Find sub-reddits/groups who are interested in the topic and share what you created!
Write a PR Statement.
Press Releases are always a helpful tool to use to engage your audiences (and help you SEO as well). Writing a Press Release can not only help get your show out into the world, it will help with back-linking and domain authority. Plus it gets information out to groups of people who may be interested in your show, but beyond the realm of your subscription base!
Special Events can impact your podcast in such a positive way, especially if it’s a topic you’re well versed, interested in, or excited about! So go ahead, start planning your podcasts next special event and watch those views roll in!
